About

PURPURIT is a Finnish Canadian Folk Dance Group sponsored by the Vancouver Finlandia Club. Purpurit2011

The group’s name is derived from “Purpuri” or potpurri which, in Finnish folk dance terms, is the name given to long ceremonial dances which probably originated as a series of small dances popular during the second half of the 19th century.

Each year Purpurit perform locally at various Finnish functions to celebrate the main holidays such as Kalevala, Juhannus and Independence Day.

The Purpurit Folk Dancers are part of the Vancouver Finlandia Club founded in the late seventies.  Purpurit has seen many members come and go.  The group has performed at several annual Finnish Canadian Grand Festivals, at Finn Fest USA, at Rick Hansen’s “Man in Motion” welcoming home celebrations, at Expo ’86 and has toured Finland and Australia.

Regular weekly rehearsals are held on Tuesday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Scandinavian Community Centre, 6540 Thomas Street, Burnaby, B.C. Canada V5B 4P9
